DRANA members – we wanted to make you aware of a proposal going to Tampa City Council for 2nd reading (final approval) on December 7 at 9:30 am (SU2-23-07). The initial vote was 4-2 for approval. (Yes: Maniscalco, Clendenin, Viera, Carlson – No: Hurtak, Miranda – Absent: Henderson). There was no public comment.
The local developer is proposing a high-rise self-storage building on Marion Street across from HART’s main bus transit center. 95% of the building will be for storage, and there will be no residential component. The current code only allows self-storage if it is no more than 40% of a mixed-use/residential building. We have a few built examples of this in the Channel District.
It might be something you’d like to weigh in on. Public comment can be submitted in writing through this link or just show up to speak in person on Dec. 7. We will follow up with the agenda item number closer to the date when it is published.
You can watch the presentation and discussion at this link. It’s from a recent evening meeting about 2 hours in. The proposal included the building design showing large exterior banners, a rooftop garden, and ground floor space for USF Entrepreneurship Center. None of that would be required if approved for storage-only and flushed out in District Design Review and Permitting.
